Hutt City
The second largest city in the Wellington region, Hutt City lies on the northern and eastern shores of Wellington harbour.

From urban park-lands and open spaces to rugged mountains and kilometres of picturesque foreshore and wild coastline, Hutt City is a sought-after film location.
Petone is the Hutt City's seaside restaurant and café centre and is dotted with heritage buildings.
Film fact: King Kong’s New York City set was built in Seaview, Lower Hutt.
Porirua
Porirua City sits in a harbour setting just 20 minutes north of Wellington. It’s a young city with a reputation for energy, creativity and talent.

Porirua’s stunning natural environment combines rolling hillsides with expansive sea and island views.
Film fact: The view from Peter Jackson’s childhood home in Porirua’s Pukerua Bay inspired the landscapes of Lord of the Rings and King Kong.
Upper Hutt
Upper Hutt is a city of 36,660 people just 25 minutes drive north from Wellington.
Upper Hutt is set amongst bush-clad hills by the Hutt River – the Great River Anduin in the Lord of the Rings trilogy
Film fact: Other Upper Hutt locations in the Lord of the Rings trilogy include Helms Deep (Dry Creek Quarry) and Rivendell (Kaitoke Regional Park)
Kapiti Coast
Featuring stunning beaches and an island nature reserve, the Kapiti Coast is just 40 minutes from Wellington and the Hutt Valley, with the towering Tararua Ranges to the east and sparkling seas to the west.

Film fact: The Venture ocean scenes in King Kong were shot in the Kapiti Island area of Cook Strait – the sea that separates the North and South islands of New Zealand.
