King Kong
The production of King Kong was based in Miramar, Wellington, particularly in the world class facilities Stone Street Studios, Weta Workshop, Weta Digital and Park Road Post.
Film Wellington assisted with many other locations around the Wellington region. Some of the location shoots included:
Skull Island
A large-scale set including the native village and giant wall which separated Kong from the rest of the island, was built above Shelly Bay. Filming for the Skull Island 'dinosaur run' scene took place at Lyall Bay.
New York
1930s New York was brought to life in Lower Hutt. A detailed depression-era replica of the Big Apple was created including Broadway, Times Square and Macy’s department store, complete with vintage cars and extras clad in period costume.
SS Venture
Ocean scenes aboard the steam ship Venture were filmed at Kapiti Coast and on the Cook Strait, a stretch of water linking Wellington to the South Island. Some Venture pier scenes were shot at Miramar Wharf in Cobham Drive, Wellington.
